What is SCWD?
SCWD is a water switching or current generating device. SCWD
switches or alternates water in two or more directions, depending on set up. It
is an excellent water current generator for both salt water and fresh water
environments, whether tank or pond. SCWD also has garden applications. It
may be installed in statuary to create alternating or switching water flow from
one spout or outlet to another or create decorative displays in garden ponds.
The patent-pending device, which requires no electricity, directs water between
two outlet ports at varying intervals. The higher the volume of water flowing
through the SCWD, the faster the switching response.
Top aquariums throughout the U.S., such as Atlantis Marine World, Birch Aquarium
at Scripps, Monterey Bay Aquarium already have used SCWD.
Why do you need a SCWD?
There is a growing need for affordable wave makers to improve aquarium and pond
ecosystems and protect expensive coral, fish and other water life and exotic
investments. Most wave makers currently require electricity and are expensive.
Until now attempts at inexpensive mechanical options have not been optimally
designed or manufactured. Small, compact, inexpensive, and manufactured in the
USA, SCWD does not use electricity, generate heat, or clutter your
aquarium, pond, or garden environments. Get the clutter out of your aquarium
install SCWD on the outside of your tank.
SCWD was subjected to over 53,000 hours of field testing and is regarded
by industry experts as the most energy efficient wave-making product on the
market. It replicates nature by generating alternating currents within a tank or
pond. These currents stimulate coral, fish, and plant growth and keep other
aquatic life healthy because of the tank or pond’s increased water currents and
oxygenation.

2 Misleading Description
|

New buyers (especially those new to the hobby) should know this unit has 3/8" ID fittings. That means there's no way it can handle 1400gph. Maybe 400gph. Anything over that is wishful thinking. And "Requires no additional energy" is not completely true. Running a SCWD removes a good deal of energy from the water's flow. Mine has worked with very few problems, but these are things that people should know before buying not after. They're good for producing dynamic flow patterns in small tanks that require less overall flow rates. Oh, and not being able to use hard plumbing (without modifying) can be aggravating.

5 Very Nice

I was worried at first that I might run into problems. I have had it running on my 100gal display for about 4months now with no problems. I am running 500gph through it.

4 Worked Great for 2 years

The SQUID worked great for two years, water flow was what I was looking for. Unfortunately I will have to purchace a new one, it has stopped switching. The good news is they are not that expensive.

5 Love it.

I have used these for awhile now,I just ordered my 3rd one now all my tanks will have one.I use a 9.5 mag on my in-sump and a Iwaki 30 RLT on my closeloop.the first 3 weeks they were kind of loud, but after that they didn't make a sound.I only seem to loose about 30% water flow but besides that I just love them.

3 reduced flow 50%
|

The first SCWD I received did not work at all. The replacement seems to be working fine, however I agree with the post that say the flow is reduced 50% and it is somewhat noisy.

3 Does waht it claims...but reduces water flow
|
01/24/2005 - by Athanasios Papavasileiou from Thessaloniki, Greece GR

It gets noisy in case it traps any kind of thing inside it. It needs good pre-filtration. It has reduced a lot - I estimate by 50% the capacity of my EHEIM pump, Now the good news: it really creates a good water motion which is stimulating to corals.

2 Noisy
|
12/21/2004 - by Dan A. from MI

I installed a new SCWD into my closed loop system. The device is louder than anything else in my tank. It makes a grinding noise. I have read online that many other people have similar problems. Besides the noise & flow reduction, works as advertised.

4 Does what it says, but...

It works, I now have a nice alternating flow pattern in my tank, but it cut flow a lot more than their web site says it will. I had about 900 gph with a pressure rated pump, and I estimate it cut this by 30-40%. Fortunately, I could throttle up the pump; if your flow rate is borderline and you want to use this on your return, get a bigger pump first. I also tried it using a mag 7 on a closed loop, it gave barely perceivable motion in a 75 gallon. Definitely made for high flow rates!

3 Cannot Clean It
|
11/11/2004 - by Christopher Lupton from New Bern, NC US

It worked for about 3 months before it just stopped? I was prefiltering water but something must have jammed it. There is NO WAY to clean the internals on this thing. I will smash it open with a brick one day to see what went wrong.
