5 RIO 2500

have used and recommended Rio pumps for over 10 years without any adverse effects to my aquariums. I currently use the 2500 plus on a 47 gallon for a return pump and a 2100 on the skimmer. I do use with a float valve in my sump and clean according to the instructions.

I am currently moving my sump to the basement so going with a much larger external, will continue to use the rio2500 for circulation, mine has been running as a sump return for 4 1/2 years, never a problem, never failed to restart after power outage, which happen here weekly.

I bought a Rio 2500 before I did any research (my bad!). I needed a pump to use for water transfer and to use as a circulation pump (no load at all, pump just sitting in tank blowing water around!). It worked pretty well for about 4 months.
Then one night, I woke up to a burning smell in my room. After searching around, I found that the 2500 in my main tank had died HARD. Smoke came up out of the water and was sucked into the return of my central heating system. There was an oily skum on the surface of my tank. Thankfully, I was just getting started reet keeping, so I have very few corals and they were all hardy. Everything did survive, but it took 3 months for everything to return to normal.
The Rio 1400 I had went into the trash the other day too. It shocked the crap out of me when I touched the water. I found out why my ORP meter had gone nuts....

While on a recent vacation we had a power outage in the area. My 2500 failed to come back on resulting in the loss of my entire livestock. Bye Bye Rio

Want to be in headline news? Buy one of these and you will end up in the 6 o'clock news. These pumps will break down and release electrical currents into the water shocking you and your tank. Never again.

All buyers are cautioned to stay away from Rio pumps. Don't just take my word for it, do some research on the internet, Rio has a TERRIBLE reputation and deservedly so. I started with the 2100 which seized on me after 4 months use. I replaced that with the 2500 which seized after 2 months use. I am going back to MAG drive pumps, a bit more expensive out of the gate but if you factor in replacing your Rio every few months you will come out way ahead.

I should have listened. It has gotten very noisy and will not restart on it's most of the time. Not even a year old yet.Replacing with a mag drive.

Worth what you pay for it - which is not much. I have had two of these units stall in the first three months. One of them actually shocked me as I was lifting it from the water. I would not recommend them for anything other than intermitent clean liquid transfer. If your tank depends on a pump, do yourself a big favor and spend a little more for one of higher quality(like a SEN 700).
