Which IceCap T5s are Optimal for
Your Environment?

By Steven Pro

T5 fluorescents are a relatively new technology for aquarium use and, as with any new technology, misconceptions abound.  Further complicating matters, there is a vast array of choices available now with more coming out seemingly everyday.  With those choices lies a wide range of options in terms of reflector shape and materials, ballast technology, and lamp design.  Some are good, some are not so good.

IceCap has long been the gold standard in electronic fluorescent ballast technology with the famous 660 and 430 ballasts.  A few years ago, we released a clip-on style T5 reflector with 95% reflectivity, which has quickly gained fame as one of the best in its class.  IceCap is now proud to announce the introduction of our own line of T5 lamps.  These lamps are made by UVL (a leader in fluorescent lamp technology) specifically for IceCap to compliment the IceCap ballasts.  They utilize the same phosphor blends with a heavy-duty filament designed to be overdriven by the IceCap ballast.  This combined IceCap T5 system (ballasts, reflectors, and lamps designed to work together for maximum performance with minimal electricity) is vastly superior to anything else on the market.

IceCap offers a variety of lamps that can be mixed and matched to suit most anyone's aquarium needs.

For those that have never used the IceCap T5 lamps with their complimenting IceCap ballasts and T5 reflectors, we offer some general guidelines and suggestions.

Aquarists will quickly discover that utilizing our combined technology requires far fewer lamps than other company's T5 offerings.  As an example, I have seen a number of underperforming fixtures on 75 gallon aquariums that need six to as many as eight 4' lamps to provide rather modest lighting levels.  The IceCap T5 system can provide the same if not higher lighting levels using as few as four lamps.

Following are a few suggestions for a standard 75 gallon aquarium.  These guidelines can be adjusted accordingly for smaller or larger display aquaria.

High light, shallow water reef display  This combination is best suited for aquariums dominated by Acropora, Seriatopora, Stylophora, Porites, and other shallow water specimens.  It provides a high Par level with broad spectrum lighting, but with plenty of blue light to bring out exceptional coral coloration.

Mixed garden reef display  For those aquarists that like to mix and match what corals they keep, a combination of lamps such as this will offer a suitable compromise solution.  It should provide sufficient lighting for higher light animals place near the surface while not over-illuminating lower light livestock placed at the bottom of the display.

Deepwater reef display  For those that love those deepwater Acanthastrea, Trachyphyllia, Scolymia, Cynarina, Fungia, Cycloseris, Blastomussa, etc. this combination of lamps will give you that desired deep water blue look with the crazy fluorescence that you crave.

T5 lighting is highly modular, providing ultimate in flexability. Simply changing lamps can altogether change the way the aquarium appears as well as the life that it is suitable to support. In fact, it is not unheard of for aquarists to purchase more than the required number of lamps for their fixtures. They do this so that they can mix or match the lamps and play around with the combinations until they create the exact desired outcome for their particular reef display. Plus, that means they have a few spare lamps just in case one burns out prematurely or gets broken.

Use the above suggestions as a guide and feel free to experiment with the lamp combinations yourself. Perhaps you will discover a combination that works exceptionally well for you. If so, let us know. We are always pleased to hear from our customers.
