| | NEW. Generation 2 VorTech Propeller Pump - MP40W
The VorTech is beautiful and designed with simplicity in mind. A magnetic couple
transmits motion through your aquarium glass and clamps the assembly against
your tank. This means you won’t have to drill your aquarium, and that you can
easily reposition the pump somewhere else in the aquarium without having to move
around complicated and awkward brackets.
The VorTech is the smallest propeller pump on the market when you consider how
little space it occupies inside the aquarium. The motor is outside of the
aquarium, meaning the VorTech may be positioned where it will be least visible.
The VorTech is elegantly discreet both in and outside your aquarium.
Flow
The VorTech produces from 500 to 3,000 gallons per hour of low velocity gentle
water current. The flow is so impressive and broad, that it actually creates an
undertow along your sand bed. You will notice an equal amount of flow going out
of your pump as you will see going back into it! Moreover, because the flow
pattern is so wide, there is no reason to direction the flow, simply place the
pump on the back or sides of your aquarium and flow will be created throughout
the whole tank.
Energy Savings
The VorTech is one of the most efficient pumps on the market, and the new MP40W
model is even more so, consuming only 28 watts to produce 3000 gallons per hour.
More importantly, all of the heat put out from the motor is outside of your
aquarium, meaning you won’t have to invest in costly chillers to keep your tank
cool.
Battery Backup Accessory (SOLD SEPARATE)
The VorTech Battery Backup will power one pump for up to 30 hours or two pumps
for 15 hours each. Alternatively, multiple battery backups can plugged in to
each other to provide even more run time during a power outage. There is no
other product that detects an outage and provides as much insurance for so
little money.
Wave Motion
Every MP40W model VorTech pump is wave controllable right out of the box! With
our new Wireless Wave Driver, the VorTech pump can act autonomously to create
waves in your aquarium, or can be synched with other pumps in the tank to create
random and pulsing movements. When any one pump is entered into feed mode, the
pump will signal all other VorTech pumps to shut down, eliminating the time
required for you to turn off each pump individually. No other pump on the market
can even compare to the intelligence of the VorTech pump.

Not one year into the mission, BOTH pumps have failed. The wetside started flying off the side of the tank on both pumps, due to the bearing seizing up. I was told by tech support it was due to poor tolerances. They replaced the parts, and, the pumps became very noisy - rattling while running despite how much effort was exerted to align them properly. They sent me a new wetside for one pump, but, it is still rattling, as now it seems that the motor on one of them is going bad. Definitely NOT worth the coin. Poor tech support - they do not respond to emails, and, you only have a 10% chance when calling to actually get the tech support person on the line, and if you leave a message, they DO NOT call you back. You have to call numerous times until finally he answers. I have had TUNZE products for YEARS with no failures such as this, and their customer service is light years ahead of Ecotech's. Sure, they have an AWESOME flow pattern that nothing else on the market touches, but, they are extremely unreliable pumps, as virtually every member of my local reef club who has these pumps has had a failure before one year's time, and has had to send them in for repairs, often taking weeks. One member has spent over $100 on shipping sending his pump back and forth. Stay away.

5 Love This Product

I think I've been more satisfied with this piece of equipment than anything I've ever gotten for an aquarium. Maybe I got lucky, but I haven't had any of the problems that others have. I love the controller and it's features and I would LOVE to have another one to see them "Sync". I definitely noticed increased coral growth after using this pump and I've now had it for well over a year. The price is high and that's the only negative. I'd love another one, but it'll take me forever to have the money for another one. I love my Vortech!

I have used Tunze streams for years now, and have been very happy with their performance, but, as my SPS corals get bigger, the size of the Tunzes has become a problem. I ordered the Vortech about a month ago, and have been very happy with it. It definitely produces a wider flow pattern than my 6101 streams can. One of these pumps alone in my 120G tank generates a nice wave across the top of my tank in reef crest mode. Even though it is near some of my staghorn corals, it has not stripped the tissue off any of them, as the Stream did in similar position. Besides the wave effect, it creates an awesome undertow on the bottom of the tank on the same side as it is placed, pulling detritus out from everywhere and putting it back into the water column for skimming. The bad thing is, if you don't place it high up in the tank, and have a sandbed, you will find your sand all over the place in the tank. Mine is placed 3" from the top of the tank, and when it ramps up to max power on reef crest mode, it still stirs up the sand bed. Makes a slight whirring noise like a computer fan when it is running, not annoying at all. I will be buying another to get eliminate the other powerheads (streams and nanostreams) in my tank.

Wanted to upgrade from regular powerheads but wanted value for money. Tunze had a great name (and a greater price sadly). ad read a LOT of BAD reviews of vortecs regarding noise, faling apart not working etc..
Got this installed in 10 min of which 3-5 min was spent figuring the pin adjustment. They need to be more descriptive about this.
Pump is the only circulation in my 120 and PULLS detrus out that i did not know existed!!! Amazing flow and reach. I saw detrus getting pulled out from between the rocks in the far end of my tank (5').
Toooo goood.

4 Impressive

Well, I am impressed. The instructions refer to some "pins" that need to be aligned correctly for the thickness of your glass. This part of the instructions could be better, or the sticker on the back of the motor could be labeled to say HERE is 3/8" HERE is 1/4" etc...
After you work that out, the installation is a breeze. The pump itself moves a LOT of water! I replaced to Nano Streams with 1 Vortech, takes up less space, and moves more water, how could ask for more?
You want more.. OK, WAVES you can make WAVES with this thing! I have not spent much time on that yet, but a 1/2 wave was moving back and forth in my 90 gallon tank in no time. With a little time and patience I am sure I will be able to dial this in to just what I want.

I had one about a year ago, that was given to me by one of ETM's resellers to try out for 30 days for free. Right out of the box it didn't work, the reseller's service manager bent over backwards for me, overnighted me a new power supply & driver. It ended up being a bad power supply right out of the box. Once we got the unit going, it wouldn't quit rattling, until it fell off the tank. Tried it for 2 weeks to keep the unit going, but it would never adjust itself properly. The rubber pins that are on the spacer gasket & to be inserted on the motor star cover were too soft, and sometimes bent instead of inserting ...
IMHO ... great idea, great flow, wider & more gentle than my Tunze streams, but the engineering & final design + execution of the idea left me wondering.
I ended up buying 5 of their competitors products.

2 A GREAT IDEA BUT............

This unit moves a tremendous amout of water. However, the quality is just not there. The power supply was faulty when I first purchased it. It was quickly replaced but then the driver unit went out, still in the first month.I have Tunzes that are YEARS old. I really dont think owners will be happy long after the 1 year warranty expires.

4 Eco Tech Marine Vortech Pump

Great product (up to now, at least!)
I live in São Paulo, Brazil and imported one unit and the battery from Premium Aquatics, no more than 45 days ago when I put the pump in operation in my 200 gallons marine fish only tank. It has a very impressive flow more than enough to move hundred gallons of water and I'm expecting it definitely solves the main problem that I currently have, meaning, the eventual power outage. Three years ago I lost 19 precious and expensive marine fishes equivalent to a US$ 5,000.00 (prices practiced at the Brazilian market) during a power outage that lasted 8 hours and caused the fishes death due to the lack of oxigen. For this reason I've installed my pump almost in the water surface so as to allow it creates a very strong water flow even sustained by its battery during a power outage. I recommend the pump, mainly for this purpose, what means also acquire the correspondent battery.

4 I'm happy

I did a lot of reading before I took the plunge on this one but I feel that it was totally worth the money. It moves water like nobodies business and runs quiet and doesn't hog up a lot of real estate.
I can only run it about 60% in my 90 but everything in my tank loves the flow, gentle and massive.
I've heard of people who have had problems but not me. Not yet anyway.
I'll also give it only a 4 for now due to the fact that it has not stood the test of time, but I don't doubt that it will. If this one lasts, I'll get another.
Recommended.
