The alkalinity of a solution refers to its capacity to buffer against drops on pH. It is a measure of the concentration of various negatively charges ionic compounds (anions) such as carbonates, bicarbonates, borates and hydroxides in the aquarium water.
The concentrations of these ions determines the buffering capacity of the water to maintain proper pH.
If the percentage of the hydrogen carbonate and carbonate ions is too low, the pH value of the water may drop severely (acidity drop) causing a life threatening condition for many plants, invertebrates and fish.
The ideal value of KH in aquarium is:
- for seawater aquarium 7 dKHø to 10 dKHø
- planted freshwater aquarium 3 dKHø to 7 dKHø

Because of the importance of KH, it is necessary to keep inside our aquariums, the proper KH Level, testing it with an accurate test kit.

ELOS AquaTest KH, as well as all the other titrimetric test kit of this line, grants an high precision thanks to several procedures like the use of calibrated dropper with constant and predefined drops of 0,05 ml each, the validation of its quality, thrugh NIST (National Institute of Standard and Technology) certified samples, in order to grant accuracy and constant results, the carefull stock management to supply to our customers ONLY the most actual and fresh production batch.

HIGHLIGHTS:
High precision: thanks to the use of calibrated dropper
NIST validation: each batch is validated using NIST (National Institute of Standard and Technology) samples
High number of test per kit: up to 60 tests (with a standard level of 10 dKH)
""Safe reagents"": reagents and testing procedures are based on Low Risk Reagents. None of Elos test kit are based on Toxic Reagents.

1 You can have mine. 02/12/2010 - by Merlin Macias from New Orleans, LA US
I still can't figure out this test. I liked the old salifert much better. The problem is the color change is so slight that I have no idea when to stop adding drops. Using this test I know that my waters between 4 to 9 dKH. Now I need to find a usable Kh kit.
5 Great Kit 10/04/2008 - by chris stewart from houston, TX US
I love the simplicity of this test kit. Add water, count drops easy color change. The down side of it is it is rather expensive compared to the tropic marin test kit which is exactly the same.
4 Faulty instructions 09/21/2008 - by Matt Lane from Lexington, KY US
From ELOS USA:

"In the newest batch of KH test kits (GIU 2010 or June 2010) it appears that the INCORRECT pamphlet may be in the box with the CORRECT intructions card. In all Elos test kits you will have a pamphlet in many different languages with instructions and warnings and a color card with illustrated and brief written instructions. In general, it is best to use the card for instructions, as these are constantly updated. In our effort to improve the resolution in some of our kits we apparently added the incorrect pamphlet to the kh. So the correct resolution is as the card reads: 1 drop of reagent = 0.5 kh when using 5ml's of test water. For those that want to save reagent and do not need the higher resolution it is possible to use 2.5ml's of test water and now each drop of reagent will = 1.0kh."

This kit is easy to use, does not get as tight a result as salifert, but so far I haven't heard any reliability issues with ELOS.
