You will need either a predrilled tank or overflow box to drain water to the sump. Then a return pump to send the water back. A Mag12/Mag18 or SEN900 works well for submersible pump. GENX or GRI518 Pump for external.

A UV sterilizer is recommended after your return pump to keep water crystal clear, but is not required.

The EcoSystem Method.
A unique filtration method based on sound ecology.

The Ecosystem Filtration Method is based on the principles of ecology and is a natural filtration system that simulates the environment found in coral reefs. It does not require a Protein Skimmer or activated carbon to purify the water. It keeps the water well oxygenated through the photosynthesis of Caulerpa and entirely eliminates the need for air pumps. Caulerpa can also be harvested and used as fresh, natural food for fish. In addition, Caulerpa prevents the growth of undesired hair algae by competing for essential nutrients.

The EcoSystem Filtration Method uses the end products of fish metabolism and fixes them into plant tissue, therefore preventing the accumulation of harmful ammonia, nitrites and nitrates, and stabilizes the pH. By maintaining a clean environment, the EcoSystem Filtration Method keeps fish healthy and their colors vibrant. Furthermore, we have discovered through our research, that our filtration system helps prevent and even cures lateral line disease.

The Ecosystem Filtration System requires minimal maintenance, and is a cost-effective way for you to keep a flourishing tank of fish and inverts. We invite you to learn more about the Ecosystem Filtration Method.

SETUP INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Place appropriate amount of Miracle Mud into Chamber # 2 of the EcoSystem Aquarium filter. (See chart Below)

  2. Pour water into the filter and let Miracle Mud settle to the bottom. (Approximately 2-3 hours).
  3. After Miracle Mud has settled, remove any floating particles.
  4. Turn on pump at a recommended flow rate of 1000 - 2000 GPH ( Gallons per Hour).
  5. Allow water to completely cycle through filter (6-8 weeks for new aquariums or until ammonia levels are undetectable). Add caulerpa algae during second week of cycling.
  6. After cycling period, quarantined fishes and corals may be introduced into the aquarium.

To continue successful maintenance of your marine aquarium system, it is recommended that you add or exchange an appropriate amount of Miracle Mud@ (50%) every two years. To ensure that this replacement process will not disturb your aquarium inhabitants, the usage of an add-on filter is highly recommended. *For existing system - Addition of Ecosystem Filter provides benefits. Smooth transition is recommended to prevent shock to fish and corals.

4 Good sump 10/17/2006 - by Alex Mitchell from Atlanta, GA US
I've had this sump for 4 years now. It works as advertised. The quality of the acrylic is great. Evidently the key is in the mud. I know now that EcoSystem should lower the prices on this sump. You can buy or build a sump for half of the price and put the Miracle mud and the bio balls in the same baffle configurations. I have added a skimmer to this sump later in the game and it does help keep organics at even a lower level. I use the main area of the sump primarily as a critter and caulerpa refugium. The light stays on 24 hours to keep any algae from going into the color bleed out or germination cycle. My skimmer draws from the first chamber where water enters and returns over the refugium chamber to create surface agitation, wich reduces unwanted microalgae. The lights are pretty hot as are any compact. I'm thinking of switching to low power blue and white LEDs on the sump for light. Great sump... Time for EcoSystem to adjust prices to compete just a little. 1 star off for price.
5 I have this Eco 3612 for ... 06/01/2004 - by Ezra Rosensaft from Bronx, NY US
I have this Eco 3612 for my 135 gal system. It has been running now for 9 months, and provides for a virtually maintenance-free saltwater aquarium. I have corals and fish in my setup, as well as 100 pounds of Live Rock. While I still add top-off water, B-ionic, food, etc. I do NOT have to bother with lots of skimming or water changes (IMHO), because the Ecosystem is removing a lot fo nutrients via the Caulerpa. This is the best money invested in a saltwater setup!
