I have used maxijets for years without a single one going bad on me. My last purchase included three of these specifically for wave-making (hopefully there as durable under stressfull off-on operation). If you're going to use them free-standing in the tank, be sure to pick up some sponge prefilters that slip over the intake grating - this will keep them from getting clogged in the impeller by detris and small critters :)
